This component will address threats outside protected areas.
Specific activities under this component will include the
design and implementation of various conservation programmes,
including, fire management, alien species control, soil
erosion, as well as the establishment of Grazing
Associations (GA) and associated Range Management Areas (RMA).
The district authorities in Mokhotlong in collaboration with
the local communities approached the MDTP to facilitate a
participatory rangeland assessment for the entire district
as an initial step towards the establishment of RMAs and the
identification of potential tourist attractions. The
assessment and mapping of potential RMAs were successfully
completed within the district. The team is currently in the
process of drafting constitutions for GAs in the Thabang
ward.
In addition to the progress made in Mokhotlong, the MDTP in
association with the Range Division in the Ministry of
Forestry and Land Reclamation facilitated a study tour for
Botha-Bothe livestock owners to a successful RMA in the
Leribe district to encourage farmers to initiate similar
initiatives within Botha-Bothe district. The tour was
successful and all the farmers who participated in the tour
are now keen to establish RMAs.
The plan is to continue supporting community RMA pilot
projects in Mokhotlong and will assist local communities in
participating villages to finalise GA constitutions. |
