This component focuses on the preparation of an
environmentally sound conservation and development zoning
plan for the project area in accordance with Article 8 of
the MoU between Lesotho and South Africa, which stipulates
that “within five years of the coming into effect of the MoU,
the Parties shall take into consideration for adoption,
through the respective domestic procedures, a zoning plan
for the Area.”
To achieve this, MDTP will have to utilize existing
information on the biophysical and social environments and
to fill information gaps through targeted surveys,
particularly biodiversity surveys.
Initial activities which have been undertaken include:
• Biodiversity literature survey (continuous)
• Collation of secondary biodiversity data (continuous)
• Establishment of an inclusive Biodiversity Working Group
(completed)
The Terms of Reference (ToR) for consultancy work on zoning
(through Strategic Environment Assessment), and for
biodiversity survey and the biodiversity monitoring
programme have been drafted, and these have been posted on
the UN Development Business Journal website.
The next step will be to request for expression on interest
from relevant firms. |
